Rumor: EA Buying Popcap?

Tech Cruch is reporting that Electronic Arts is about to acquire casual games giant Popcap Games for a cool $1 billion, which would exceed EA’s market cap by over 13%. If true, this would be EA’s definitive entry into the casual games market, a field they broke into 7 years ago.

Despite consuming a significant chunk of EA’s reserves. buying Popcap would bring them IPs such as Bejeweled, Plants Vs. Zombies, Peggle, Zuma and Bookworm.

We’ll keep an eye on this deal as it happens.

PopCap Games has announced they will be releasing Bejeweled 3 on five different platforms. Bejeweled 3 will be released on Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, PSN, Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE Arcade. The title will be released on all five platforms at the same time in Q4 2011.

“Critics agree that Bejeweled 3 raised the standard for match-3 games to new heights,” said Ed Allard, studio head at PopCap Games.  “This holiday, we’re bringing that experience to PlayStation 3, PSN, Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE, and Nintendo DS gamers with adaptations that look great and play even better on each platform.”

Bejeweled 3 took the match three genre to the next level. The third installment added eight mini-games and a complete revision of sound and graphics. The fundamental game play has not changed; players still match three or more of the same gem. Bejeweled 3 is a fun game and it is great news that it will be coming to more platforms.

Dyad Revealed for PSN

PlayStation US Blog has announced a new abstract racer for PlayStation Network on the PS3 called Dyad, which is a weird melding of Rez and Wipeout.

Dyad is an abstract racing game that has influences in many genres including racing games, fighting games, puzzle games and classic arcade shooters. According to the blog, it does away with the traditional racing game mechanics of break and accelerate and replaces them with puzzle-like mechanics. You must interact with your enemies in unique and varying ways in order to gain speed.

The developer, Shawn McGrath, revealed that his team had been hard at work on Dyad for the past three years. The game runs at 60fps at 1080p.

Cell Bound Now on iOS

Hothead Games has announced the release of Cell Bound for the iPhone/iPod Touch and the iPad. The goal of the game is to keep the culture dish clean. The dish needs to be kept clean to save the science experiment.

As soon as the dish is put into the players hands it becomes contaminated. Players have to keep the contamination away by spinning the dish and matching the five or more of the same color germs. The germs are coming in from all different directions and the player has to spin the dish so the germs land with the same color as the approaching germ. The germs will disappear an when they are matched with five or more of the same color.

Players have three different play modes to choose, Infinite mode, Burst Mode and Timer Mode. Infinite Mode is the main game play mode and players try to match five or more of the same color germ to clear them. Timer Mode has players attempting to gain as many points as possible in a minute and thirty seconds. The last mode is Burst Mode, which challenges players by turning cells that are not the same color that are next to each other black. The black cells make it more difficult to make new matches.

If Cell Bound sounds like a fun game, head over to the Apple App Store and pick up a copy.
