Sega has had a few hit games over their lifetime and have decided to turn some of those hit games into web-based games. Sega has put together a casual games portal, Play Sega, that features some of their games, item collecting and social networking all in one spot.
“It’s a mixture of Sega classic titles and some new innovation,” explained Sega’s Network business director Nick Pili to CasualGaming.biz. “We have a fantastic operation here. Play Sega has three elements: mini-web games, item collecting and social networking. A lot of websites do fantastic elements of those – but we bring it all together.
“There are only a couple of other companies out there that have anything like the heritage we do – or can inspire the same affection amongst their fans. This is the first time the Sega community can come together in one place, whilst enjoying some of our most exciting vintage and new IP. There was a story out there recently that we have a locked vaut full of retro Sega classics in Japan. Well, it’s true – and we’ve been given full access to most of the properties in it.”
Users can register for free, but setting up their space the way they want it to look will cost Sega currency, Sega Rings, which are earned by playing games. The first games available are Sonic At The Olympic Games, The Hollywood Adventure Movie Quiz and Ice Shuffle, but Sega plans to add 30 more games as time goes on.
This is a great idea for Sega to try. They have a huge fan base that really like their games, so why not try to get those fans all together in one site playing the games they enjoy. The users can now play the games and socialize with other Sega game fans.
