Sega of America CEO, Simon Jeffery, thinks big publishers publishing games on social networking sites will cause the people to leave the social network. He feels publishing games to the social networks, such as Facebook, can be a tricky business and Sega is content releasing a few games for Facebook, but not taking a huge stake in the games for Facebook.Facebook

“The social networking area is challenging for game companies,” he told VentureBeat.

“As soon as EA focuses on Facebook, the kids will move on. Look at how fast MySpace came and went in the US. That space needs to mature. We will play in it but won’t over-invest.”

There are two ways to look at this comment. The first way is Jeffery is saying big publishers will cause peole to leave Facebook and the other way is by the time EA gets the games ready for Facebook, the users will be on to a new phase. If he really means big publishers will cause people to leave Facebook, I don’t agree. I think there were different reasons people left MySpace and most the reasons had to do with MySpace being closed to new ideas and not listening to their users. Along came Facebook and listened to their users and opened up the platform, which caused people to move over to Facebook and leave MySpace. The fact that big publishers are publishing games on Facebook probably won’t cause people to leave Facebook. If you like the game, you install the game and play it. If you don’t like the game, you don’t install the game and continue to use Facebook as you always did. If he means that users will be onto a new phase by the time the games are ready, that is entirely possible.
