SFGate.com got a chance to sit down and talk with Ubisoft’s North American president, Laurent Detoc. They talked about a few different things, but the most interesting was Detoc’s comment on Ubisoft’s casual games business.
Detoc said the company will continue to be at the forefront of the casual gaming boom, which he said has been part of Ubisoft’s recent success. He said casual games contributed 25 percent of Ubisoft’s sales.
“We feel that’s a good opportunity for us,” he said. “People want games that are more accessible and less intimidating. We have been exploring a lot in that space and we think we will have an advantage as that group gets bigger.”
It is nice to see big companies say they are committed to casual games and to making the games new and innovative. The big companies have the resources to test the market and see what will work and what won’t work with casual games. Instead of just reproducing clones. Clones are less risky for new developers to get into the market, but the big guys can take chances every now and then to expand the market. The big guys are enticed to do this when 25% of their profits come from casual games.
Thanks SFGate.com
