Apparently, the folks at PS3Fanboy spoke with some of the developers of Little Big Planet and the end result of this conversation was: No Public Beta.
The original idea was to publicly release an open beta test of Little Big Planet for gamers to try from a much broader audience but, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be the driving direction for the title. Having a public beta would produce much more work for the teams, for sure, as they’d have to post a build for gamers to fetch on the PlayStation Network (not sure if that’s even possible at this point) and setup a way for the community to respond to issues.
Little Big Planet will be tested internally, as most titles would be, and released to the public with a final product. Unfortunately, this doesn’t give casual gamers a chance to play test the title and give their feedback to the developers. It takes a specific style of developer to “understand” the casual game market so we await and see if they’ve got it right.
Considering a casual gamer probably isn’t an owner of a PlayStation 3 at this point, would Little Big Planet really drive casual gamers to invest in this costly console?
