Ashley Jones and the Heart of Egypt is a match three game with a unique storyline and a little bit different game play. The match three is like every other match three, where you match three objects of the same type and they disappear. The part that makes the match three unique is that you have to clear all of the blue squares by matching three objects within the blue squares. Under a particular blue square, you don’t know which ones, is an artifact. Once the artifact is found, it needs to be moved to the bottom of the board. The player receives the artifact after it has been moved to the bottom of the board. Each level does not end until you clear all of the blue squares and get the artifact.
The levels are your typical match three boards, but the configurations of the boards are never rectangular. The boards all have some sort of missing square or cut out shape to them. The board configurations make clearing all of the blue square matches more challenging than normal match three level configurations. The artifacts are hidden on the board somewhere and the players have to get the artifact to the bottom of the row it is in before the level will end. The player makes matches below the artifact to get the artifact to move down the row. The artifact, or piece of an artifact in some cases, is obtained when it reaches the bottom of the row. The artifacts are then stored in a museum and you can arrange them any way you would like.
Players have three lives to complete a level and after three lives the game is over. Players have to get rid of all the blue scares and get the artifact to the bottom of the row it is in before time runs out. When the time runs out the level is over and you lose a live. The level starts again, but you are not started from the beginning of the level you start from where you were before time ran out. In other words, the blue squares that you cleared before and the artifact stays where it was.
Ashley Jones and the Heart of Egypt contains power ups to help the players out when they are stuck. The power ups are useful and come in handy often. There is a dig power up that helped me out a lot. Instead of waiting for a match to happen containing the objects below the artifact, you can use the shovel and “dig” the object below the artifact and have it hit the bottom of the row.
The graphics in Ashley Jones and the Hear of Egypt are really nice looking. The map of the levels starts out really plain looking, but then morphs into a map with grass and items on it. The backgrounds are nice looking and contain scenes out of Egypt. The story line graphics are also nicely done and have the main character pictured with a story written on paper in hand writing, which makes it look like an authentic journal.
Ashley Jones and the Heart of Egypt is a typical match three game, but this one has the added challenge of getting the artifact to the bottom of the row before time runs out. The game is fun to play and has the added challenge of clearing the blue squares and obtaining the artifact.
