Atari Centipede Are you the owner of a Sony PSP hand held device with the dream of playing some super retro games? You remember the days sitting in front of your Atari 2600 playing Asteroids? Could you even imagine playing these “high tech” games on a hand-held device the size of your palm?

Atari, today, announced their plans to bring the classics to the PSP. The classic games which will make the Atari Classics Evolved game release:

Asteroids
Asteroids Deluxe
Battlezone
Centipede
Lunar Lander
Millipede
Missile Command
Super Breakout
Tempest
Warlords
Pong

Why re-buy these old classics when you can get an Atari on eBay any day of the week? Because they’ll also come built with an ‘evolved’ version of the game to answer the question “What would it be like to see Super Breakout re-built today?” These titles will maintain classic gameplay with added graphical advantages, much like you’d see on Xbox Live Marketplace I’m guessing.

Is this what the market wants, or is Atari trying to dig themselves out of a financial whole by grasping at the low hanging fruit of game development? Or, perhaps, a little of both.

Atari Announces Development Of Atari Classics Evolved For The PSP^® System -

NEW YORK, Aug. 21 - Atari, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATAR), one of the world’s most recognized brands and a third-party video game publisher, today announced that Atari Classics Evolved, an homage to Atari’s landmark catalogue, is in development on the PSP^® (PlayStation^®Portable) system. Developed by Stainless Games Ltd., Atari Classics Evolved is schedule for a Fall 2007 release.

Atari Classics Evolved will feature such timeless games as Asteroids^TM, Asteroids^TM Deluxe, Battlezone^®, Centipede^TM, Lunar Lander^®, Millipede^®, Missile Command^®, Super Breakout^TM, Tempest^TM, Warlords^TM and Pong^®. These titles, presented in both an original and an evolved version, will maintain the original gameplay while adding beautifully rendered up-to-date graphics.

In addition to the 11 evolved classics, more than 60 original Atari 2600 titles will be available for gameplay such as the memorable Yar’s Revenge^TM, Night Driver^TM, Canyon Bomber^TM and Crystal Castles^TM to name a few. Atari Classics will feature online Leaderboards for the original 11 coin-op games, allowing players around the world to compare scores, and will also feature peer-to-peer wireless compatibility for titles that have multiplayer capabilities.
