Do you have a young child around the four year old age? Have you been looking for a simple game to introduce them to video games? If you own a Nintendo DS you should check out Hamsterz Life from Ubisoft.
To an adult, the game may seem a bit lame, almost boring to its core, but young kids will find it an attractive alternative to watching you play video games. It’s been tough to find a game that’s best suited for my little girl, she has Nintendogs as well but she really has a hard time making money to buy the dog food and taking them for walks because its built for an older child.
Hamsterz is a perfect fit, she can play some mini-games on her own to win food, water, toys and cage upgrades. Some of the mini-games are a bit of a challenge, but we work through those together (good for a bit of fun interaction with the family).
The goal of the game is simple, take care of your hamster and keep them happy. Not as basic as some Japanese keychain games but not as hard as a true pet simulator. A happy medium where a child can pet their hamster, feed them, groom them and let the out of the cage to play on the floor.
The mini-game concept is good, but I’m not a big fan of the random game and random difficulty (it would be great if you could set it ahead of time). My daughter can play through the simple games but when its random, you never know if it’s going to be hard or not and she cannot read so it’s hard for her to tell us if she needs help.
The game is probably aimed at a higher age, but Hamsterz Life is the closest thing we’ve found for a child in the ballpark of 4-years-old. So, if you’re at the store looking at the back of the box and reading the 140 word description and you’re still unsure… check out Hamsterz Life. They also had a game called Horsez Life that may have been just as good.
