Steven Spielberg tells newsweek how he’s jumping into the video game industry for a few titles. One such title is a Wii game that’s going to follow the Wii tradition by being a puzzle-based game.
Imagine two great minds, Shigeru Miyamoto meets Steven Spielberg, to form a monster that could be as great as the legendary Voltron. Okay, it’s not a massive robot but after some talks at a 2006 video game conference they had a neat concept that has turned into a reality.
“Afterwards, we were talking about the Wii and I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if we could dot-dot-dot?’ ” That dot-dot-dot turned out to be an action-puzzle simulator—code-named PQRS—that neatly blends the creativity of the building-blocks game Jenga with the charm of a Saturday-morning cartoon.
The idea sounds very Wii like and could become a huge casual gaming hit. If you’re going to produce a puzzle game the target Wii platform is the place to showcase your magic.
It runs on top of a physics program that lets you manipulate blocks with the Wii remote as if it were an extension of your hand. Or, as Spielberg explains for all the non-geeks out there, “It just seemed like a great thing for the entire family to play together over Christmas. Although you don’t need the excuse of a holiday to enjoy it.”
This isn’t Mr. Spielbergs first venture into gaming, The Dig was one of his initial creations for Lucas Arts back in 1989. He also managed to start an interactive unit when he co-founded DreamWorks but sold it off to Electronic Arts due to its ability to lose money.
That EA relationship fostered into three game titles, one of which is PQRS headed to the Wii. Will it live up to the Wii standards for addictive casual games?
